Lula’s sound man, Howard Laurie gave me a great gift yesterday – a board recording of the Lula AllStars concert night. In a previous post, I put a clip from that show, which was pretty limited by the camera-only sound that I had to work with.
The board sound reflects the mix that Howard puts together for the house sound, so it drops the big, powerful instruments that need less amplification. What it does really well is catch the vocals, the piano and the horns, which were mostly weak points in the camera sound. On the other hand, the board removes most of the audience, and most of the bass punch that you’d feel in the room.
So I played around with a low pass filter on my camera sound, to prevent phase effects and general ‘echo’ when I combined the two audio recordings. The camera provides the thump, the board recording the brightness and detail, and while it’s far from perfect, it definitely gives me a great starting point to attack the footage from.
It almost seemed worth an edit. So here it is, a first shot at creating a little edit excitement.
